El seminario es un proyecto organizado por los jóvenes investigadores del grupo MIRCAALT (Significado, Identidad y Representación en la Literatura Anglo-Norteamericana y el Teatro). La actividad cuenta con el apoyo del grupo de investigación, con su proyecto PID2024-160004OB-I00, y del Master en Estudios Literarios y Culturales de los Países de Habla Inglesa, y de Philobiblion: Asociación de Jóvenes Hispanistas. El objetivo se centra en ofrecer la oportunidad de revisar los conceptos de significado, identidad, representación y cultura a través de perspectivas de investigadores e investigadoras nóveles; asimismo, se pretende crear un espacio académico orientado a estas personas donde puedan compartir y crear junto a otras. También espera servir como un primer paso para el estudiantado de máster y últimos cursos de grado que quiera seguir la carrera académica. Las principales líneas de investigación propuestas son: lo queer, las fronteras, la ecocrítica, la diáspora, lo indígena, la maternidad, y los estudios de discapacidades en literatura.

This seminar is organized by the Young Scholars of the MIRCAALT Research Group (Meaning, Identity, Representation and Culture in Anglo-American Literature and Theatre). This activity is supported by the research group, their project PID2024-160004OB-I00, the Master in Literary and Cultural Studies of Angloamerican Countries (UAM) and Philobiblion: Asociación de Jóvenes Hispanistas. The aim of this seminar is to offer the opportunity to revise the concepts of meaning, identity, representation and culture through the lenses of early career scholars. It is also an effort to create an academic space for these scholars to share and build knowledge among peers. It will also serve as a first step in the academic world for undergraduate and postgraduate students who want to follow an academic career. The main research lines are: queer studies, border studies, ecocriticism, diaspora literature, indigenous studies, motherhood studies and disability studies.

Desde la Sociedad de Debate de la UAM, junto con el Vicerrectorado de Estudiantes de la UAM, organizamos la cuarta edición del Torneo Nacional de Debate para estudiantes de institutos de toda España.

El objetivo del torneo es ayudar a los estudiantes más jóvenes a desarrollar sus habilidades comunicativas, así como fomentar la imagen de la UAM y que los futuros universitarios la tengan en cuenta a la hora de elegir dónde continuar su formación. El torneo se desarrolla en formato académico, lo que implica que en cada aula se enfrentan dos equipos, con un máximo de cinco alumnos cada uno, para debatir las posturas a favor o en contra de la pregunta: “¿Deben los países democráticos intervenir unilateralmente en conflictos ajenos para salvaguardar los Derechos Humanos?”.

Las sesiones de debate tendrán lugar el viernes 13 y el sábado 14 de marzo en el campus de la UAM en Cantoblanco.

Aunque los préstamos árabes son el resultado del fenómeno de contacto más prolongado en el tiempo (casi 900 años) que el español haya tenido con otra lengua en su historia, no ha sido un tema especialmente cultivado por el hispanismo.

El árabe, la otra lengua o la lengua de los otros, fue, durante varios siglos, la lengua dominante desde el punto de vista lingüístico-cultural y, en otros, al menos, la lengua de uno de los grupos humanos que conformaban las sociedades medievales en la Edad Media peninsular.

En esta sesión trataremos, con las herramientas que la sociolingüística histórica nos facilita, los diversos y complejos procesos de contacto que se dieron entre el español y el árabe en la Edad Media, en los que los factores sociales (relación de dominio, prestigio, distancia social, actitudes e imagen del otro), así como los grupos que actuaron como intermediarios, fueron cambiando.

Este seminario se plantea como una introducción al estudio de los procesos de distinción social asociados al aprendizaje de la lengua inglesa en España en la actualidad. El seminario se estructurará en torno a los resultados del proyecto I+D ENIFALPO (2020-2024), en el que se investigaron las estrategias familiares de las clases medias y medias-altas para asegurar un “muy buen nivel de inglés” de sus hijas e hijos. Se reflexionará acerca de los imaginarios sociales y culturales asociados a la inmersión lingüística y también se introducirá el campo de estudio de las políticas lingüísticas familiares (PLF) y las posibilidades (y limitaciones) que ofrece. Durante el seminario se fomentará la participación activa del alumnado en procesos de reflexión acerca de los discursos e ideologías lingüísticas asociadas a la lengua inglesa en España y a nivel global y también en relación con el análisis y triangulación de datos etnográficos.

Deadlines and procedures:

·       Please submit an abstract of your presentation (maximum 300 words including the name of the author(s), title, key words, examples, tables, figures, and references) and a short bio (100 words) by 1 September 2024 to the following email address: avelino.corral@uam.es;

·       Authors should mention in the abstract whether they plan to present their paper online or in-person.

·       Abstracts must be submitted in MS Word format (*.doc or *.docx) and set in Times New Roman with a font size 12 pt. The text must be justified, with 1 line-spacing used for running text.

·       The organizers will notify acceptances by October 15, 2024.

·       Accepted papers will be grouped into thematic sessions;

·       The program will be available in mid-December on the dedicated conference website 46th AIM website, which will be online shortly; in the meantime please consult the AIW site: www.american-indian-workshop.org.

·       Presentations will last 20 minutes and be followed by discussion of 5-10 minutes.

El tercer Torneo de Debate Escolar de la UAM, organizado por el Vicerrectorado de Estudiantes y Empleabilidad y SDUAM con el patrocinio de Casa del Libro, quiere acercar la disciplina del debate a los estudiantes preuniversitarios en la convicción de que es una actividad fundamental para la formación académica, profesional y personal de los estudiantes preuniversitarios.  Con la continuidad de este Torneo queremos contribuir a la importantísima labor que, en este sentido, se desarrolla desde los centros educativos.

Se celebra los próximos días 7 y 8 de febrero en la Facultad de Psicología de la UAM, en el Campus de Cantoblanco. La actividad está dirigida a estudiantes desde 3º de la ESO a 2º de Bachillerato. Todos los equipos estarán compuestos por un mínimo de tres y un máximo de cinco estudiantes.

A wide range of models and descriptions of the international scope of English have been proposed to identify the groups of use(r)s of the language, and to include the diversity of contexts of language use and users’ competence, together with a range of native and non-native varieties and cultures while stressing the concepts of identity, standard/non-standard, accent/intelligibility, and language ownership. Based on the paradigm of Global Englishes, an umbrella term that includes English as a Lingua Franca, World Englishes and English as an International Language perspectives, this session aims to bring forth approaches that promote the development of students’ intercultural communicative competence when dealing with a diversity of English varieties (such as African American Vernacular English, Australian English, Indian English). Its primary objective, though, is to enhance English users’ understanding of how language and culture are closely linked and to highlight the rich linguistic, cultural, and intercultural variety of English.

Tras el Primer Congreso Toponomasticon Hispaniae. Interterritorialidad e interdisciplinariedad, que tuvo lugar en Lérida, entre los días 27 y 29 de junio de 2022, como sección especial del congreso internacional “International Medieval Meeting”, el II Congreso Toponomasticon Hispaniae. Claves en la investigación toponímica tendrá lugar en Miraflores de la Sierra y Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) entre los días 2 y 4 de octubre de 2023.

El congreso reunirá a miembros de los seis proyectos coordinados en el Toponomasticon Hispaniae y a otros investigadores en las distintas facetas de la toponimia. Será una gran ocasión para compartir ideas, discutir algunas cuestiones de detalle en la coordinación de los proyectos y seguir avanzando en la página de resultados, que está ya activa. Servirá, en definitiva, para dar un impulso notable al proyecto integrado cuando se alcanza precisamente el ecuador de su duración temporal.

La residencia universitaria "La Cristalera" de la UAM nos ofrece una posibilidad magnífica para este congreso con unas instalaciones de gran calidad, a un precio muy competitivo. Por ello mismo, al celebrarse en su mayor parte  en una residencia universitaria y en este entorno privilegiado, este congreso está concebido también como unas jornadas de convivencia estrecha en las que el intercambio y contraste de pareceres y conocimientos tendrán lugar no solo en las sesiones científicas, sino antes y después de ellas en la medida en que cada uno de los participantes así lo estime oportuno. Por esta razón, la organización ruega encarecidamente a los participantes que su estancia se prolongue durante todas las jornadas.

El II Congreso Iberoamericano de Argumentación pretende reunir a los estudiosos de la argumentación en español y portugués de ambos lados del Atlántico para conocer, difundir, discutir y poner en común los avances teóricos, analíticos, empíricos y prácticos de los estudios de la argumentación en sus diferentes expresiones.

O 2º Congresso Ibero-Americano de Argumentação visa reunir estudiosos da argumentação em espanhol e português de ambos os lados do Atlântico para aprender, divulgar, discutir e compartilhar avanços teóricos, analíticos, empíricos e práticos no estudo da argumentação em suas diferentes expressões. 

The LL Workshops are one of the most prominent spaces in the LL field to generate knowledge and share research. Since its first edition, in Tel Aviv (2008), there have been thirteen LL Workshops, held in numerous cities on four different continents: Siena (2009), Strasbourg (2010), Addis Abeba (2012), Namur (2013), Cape Town (2014), Berkeley (2015), Luxembourg (2016), Liverpool (2017), Bern (2018), Bangkok (2019), Gothenburg (2021, online), and Hamburg (2022).

The fourteenth edition of the LL Workshop will be held September 6-8, 2023 in Madrid, sponsored by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Research Center Multilingualism, Discourse and Communication (MIRCo).

LL14 will explore how the dystopian character of our daily reality and utopian imagination all around the world are reflected in the linguistic landscape.

El primer Torneo de Debate Escolar de la UAM , organizado por el Vicerrectorado de Estudiantes y SDUAM quiere acercar la disciplina del debate a los estudiantes preuniversitarios en la convicción de que es una actividad fundamental para la formación académica, profesional y personal de los y las estudiantes preuniversitarios, y con la puesta en marcha de este Torneo, queremos contribuir a la importantísima labor que, en este sentido, se desarrolla desde los centros educativos.

Se celebra los próximos días 16 y 17 de diciembre en la Facultad de Psicología de la UAM, en el Campus de Cantoblanco y para esta primera edición, la pregunta elegida es:

 ¿DEBERÍA ESPAÑA PRIORIZAR, EN EL MEDIO PLAZO, EL CRECIMIENTO ECONÓMICO EN LUGAR DE LA LUCHA CONTRA EL CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO?

In bilingual education contexts such as those found in Spain understanding the disciplinary literacy needs for each subject is challenging for learners and teachers. However, sharing the same language to talk about language (a metalanguage) and sharing key concepts, e.g. genre and register can have a positive impact on teaching and learning.

Focusing on one discipline, science, I outline the role of metalanguage, in relation to genre – ‘the staged goal social oriented process’ of a text and register, i.e. the choices we make when we use language. Drawing on data collected in the science classroom, we will be involved in analysing together the ways in which the teacher and learners use ‘register’ in the science classroom to differentiate between commonsense and technical language. Understanding how teachers use metalinguistic resources such as register in the classroom can provide valuable insights into the role and benefits of explicitly teaching language for curriculum learning.

During this Staff week, participants will immerse in the Spanish language and culture, with 15 hours of Spanish classes focusing on the usage of Spanish in administrative environments. 

If you have an intermediate (B1) level of Spanish, join us at the UAM.  You will immerse in Spanish, visit beautiful cultural sites of Madrid, and network with other administrative staff, both from the UAM as well as other European universities.

Rather than making a definitive statement that closes down debate or rules out critique, this seminar will explore the numerous ways, as writers, word activists and theatre creators, we can and should welcome dissent and discussion.  The last word can be a way of stifling democracy or the recognition that as a race and planet we are in grave danger and that our words must have impact.  We must claim, even occupy, language in the face of possible extinction; we must connect, create and communicate; our words must work against the distractions and obfuscations of the fossil fuel industry, the wellness industry, the industry of war, the industry of spreading American Values.  In my goal to resist the dominant language of the state and social media, I will touch on hedgehogs and Shakespeare, oil companies and the facts of the climate emergency, and the organisations mobilising for a different future.  How can we heed MLK’s statement that “love is the last word”, not nation or capitalism or profit or the individual?

In this seminar, participants will have the chance to discuss with Prof. Linda Ben-Zvi the political use of theatre in the works of US women playwrights Susan Glaspell and Maria Irene Fornes. These playwrights’ use of the stage to voice political, social and legal demands at key points of 20^th and 21^st century will be argued, as well as the needs for specific female voices and new forms of theatre. This seminar follows Linda Ben-Zvi’s presentation "Antoinette Nwandu’s Pass Over: Drama of the Past Becoming Theatre of the Present” (June 1^st, La Cristalera, 10:00)

In this seminar Naomi Wallace will talk with UAM postgraduate students about her own practice as a playwright. Students will have the chance to engage in Q&A with this distinguished practitioner and discuss the political use of theatre as tool to change society. Matters of scholarship, criticism, formal innovations and education of the audience in the 21^st century will be important matters to be discussed. Special attention will be paid to her play Slaughter City.

This seminar is followed by Wallace’s lecture “The Last Word: Writing in a Time of Emergency” (June 1^st, 17:00, La Cristalera)

August 4, 2021 in NYC marked an end and a beginning: the end of Broadway’s 17-month closure due to Covid-19 and the premiere of a new play, Pass Over, by first-time Broadway playwright Antoinette Nwandu and director Danya Taymor. Both were welcomed by a standing ovation before the play began, after it ended, and during the celebratory block party held outside the theatre named for Black playwright August Wilson. It was an appropriate Broadway venue for a play written by a Black woman, about the scourge of police harassment, brutality and murder of Black youth in America and the systematic racism that allows it to continue. Nwandu chose a modern classic, Waiting for Godot, itself with roots reaching back to a theatre form centuries old, Commedia dell’arte; and she combines it with the Biblical story in Exodus of the Jewish people seeking freedom from oppression, and dreaming to pass over to a promised land. The result is a drama as realistic and as current as media headlines of the murder of Trayvon Martin, whose death at the hands of police prompted Nwandu in 2014 to begin writing her play. The deaths of so many others kept her writing and editing the work over the next seven years, producing three versions of the play. This seminar focuses on Pass Over, one of the most innovative and relevant plays in recent years. It uses an earlier play, reworks elements of its plot, theme, character delineations, staging, language, and performative styles, and thus illustrates how theatre of the past becomes new in the present

This is followed by UAM postgraduate students’ meeting with Prof. Linda Ben-Zvi to discuss the political role of US women playwrights during the 20^th and 21^st century in the seminar “20^th and 21^st-century US women Playwrights: Theatre, Representation, Politics” (June 1^st, 16:00, La Cristalera)

This talk will try to show both the pervasiveness and importance of liminal figures of thought

in contemporary cultural theories and to discuss some of their functions. The dynamics of

Turner’s liminoid, his distinction between communitas and structure, and the pivotal

function of the liminal between a previous and a future state reverberate in contemporary

cultural theories. Turner’s oft-cited characterization of liminality as a “coincidence of

opposite processes and notions in a single representation [. . .]: that which is neither this nor

that, and yet is both” (Turner, The Forest of Symbols 99) is echoed by Giorgio Agamben’s

ethical and juridical constructs of the state of exception, sovereignty, and bare life as well as

by Judith Butler’s thoughts about precarious life and the force of nonviolence; by

environmental concepts, such as Jane Bennett’s vibrant matter, N. Katherine Hayles’s

unthought, and Patricia MacCormack’s ahumanism.

This paper in progress leans on Androutsopoulos’s (2012) framework to investigate what linguistic dimensions multilingual filmgoers recognize in the linguistic repertoires of the characters and how they react to cinematic indexicalities in their comments and evaluations. Leaning on his cinematic indexicalities, it should be possible to analyze the accents, dialects, sociolects, code-switching, and grammar mistakes, in migrant cinema.

Based on data from classrooms in Luxembourg, Sweden, and Turkey, this talk will focus on embodied and multilingual aspects of English language classroom interaction. Using videos and transcriptions based on naturally occurring data, we will explore different multimodal resources that teachers and students deploy to establish understanding and create opportunities for student engagement. The talk will include hands-on tasks to allow students to work collaboratively on classroom data, while introducing basic principles of multimodal conversation analysis to investigate classroom discourse. Implications for teaching and teacher education will be discussed.

The CIVIS Multilingualism Network inaugurates its seminar series
MULTILINGUALISM: THE LANGUAGE OF CIVIS

The CIVIS Multilingualism Network (CMN), comprised of scholars from CIVIS universities, is organising its inaugural Multilingualism and Language Policy seminar series, hosted by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and co-organised with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Stockholm University and the University of Glasgow. 

This four-seminar workshop on the interdisciplinary area of multilingualism and language policy aims to raise awareness of the relevance of languages in social processes, in attitudes, in our daily lives, and in the construction of CIVIS, and to  inform language policies within the consortium.

The seminar series welcomes scholars, young researchers, as well as senior and postgraduate students to participate in four online seminars during the academic year 2021-2022. 

The seminar series will make available, free of charge, to those who register for the seminars:

• resources, such as video-lectures, books and articles (open source)

• a media space for participants to upload relevant photos, graphics, podcasts, videos, posters, and other types of multimodal and multimedia texts

• forum for discussion among participants

• e-surveys and e-questionnaire formn

The Faculty of Philosophy and Arts at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and ULB Langues at Université Libre de Bruxelles kindly invite CIVIS members to join the Language Teaching Staff Training Week to be held on 2 and 3 June 2021. The Training Week will help map the different language levels taught across CIVIS universities in undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and it will provide a space to share expertise and best practice among the academic staff that belong to the network.

The programme will be organized under three main themes:

• Mapping languages and levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
• Current teaching models (e.g. communicative language teaching, task based language learning, collaborative learning, tandem language learning, skills development, internationalization in the classroom, etc.) and teaching material
• Modern Technologies, blended learning, blended mobility

The seminar will be held over two days, (June 2-3 2021).

Sessions one to three will address common issues related to the teaching of foreign languages, in order to share the acquired know-how, the challenges ahead, needs and objectives for the future and the new possibilities opened by options like blended and virtual mobility within the CIVIS Network.

In these common sessions, speakers will be invited to present the philosophy and methods of their teaching system in order to share the valuable knowledge accrued to date. It is considered that the pulse for innovation must not come from a void, but from a seasoned reflection on the current state of affairs, the successes of the past, the challenges of the present and the projected future objectives.

The fourth, fifth and sixth sessions will be held in parallel online rooms in order to address the specific issues of the different languages taught at CIVIS universities, especially dealing with the different language levels and the material and resources used for their teaching.
